Bohali Hill, Venetian Castle

Perched on Bohali Hill above Zakynthos Town, the Venetian Castle of Zakynthos stands as a testament to the island’s rich history. Built on the site of an ancient acropolis and a former Byzantine fortress, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. The Venetians completed its construction in 1646 AD, leaving their mark with the Winged Lion of Saint Mark above the entrance, a symbol of their powerful empire. During Venetian rule, the castle served as the administrative center and residence of the Venetian Proveditor, along with other high-ranking officials. However, time, wars, and earthquakes took their toll, partially damaging the structure.

Discover Byzantine and British Heritage on the Ionian Islands

When the British took control of the Ionian Islands in 1812, they reinforced the castle and added several new buildings. These included military barracks, gunpowder stores, and even a house for the British Parliament. This period of British rule brought further architectural changes that visitors can still see today.

Beyond its military and political significance, the castle also housed several important churches within its walls. The 12th-century Byzantine Church of the Savior (San Salvatore) stands among the most notable, along with the 14th-century Church of Saint Francis. Other historic chapels, including the churches of Santa Barbara, the Virgin Mary Laurentena, and Saint John the Baptist, reflect the island’s deep religious heritage.

The castle not only provides a journey through history but also offers stunning panoramic views of Zakynthos Town and the Ionian Sea. After exploring, visitors can head to nearby attractions like Tsilivi Beach, Akrotiri Village, downtown Zakynthos, and the lively Argassi resort, making it an excellent stop on any island itinerary.
